Last updated: 26 October 2026. Ocean and air readings are the published assessments for the week to 22 October; fee schedules are the versions in force on 1 October 2026. Each table says which is which.
Shipping cost from China to US breaks into three layers, and the smallest is the one every quote leads with. A 40ft container of general consumer goods from Shanghai to Los Angeles pays about $8,000 to cross the Pacific, $1,600 to $2,500 to clear and deliver, and $16,875 in duty at the rate most Chinese consumer goods now carry.
This page gives you the current price for each mode, then opens up the bill line by line: what the carrier charges, what the terminal charges, what the broker charges, what CBP charges, and which of those you can actually influence. Rates carry their as-of date. A quote is a different object: it has a vessel, a week and a surcharge list attached, and no page can give you one.
Live rate snapshot: October 2026
| Mode | Lane | What you pay this month | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| FCL, 40HQ | Shanghai to Los Angeles / Long Beach | $8,007 to $8,126 per box | Drewry 22 Oct; Freightos week to 20 Oct |
| FCL, 20GP | Shanghai to Los Angeles / Long Beach | $5,765 to $6,500 per box | 40ft rate × 0.72 to 0.80 |
| FCL, 40HQ | Shanghai to New York / New Jersey | $9,713 to $10,166 per box | Freightos; Drewry |
| LCL | Shanghai to Los Angeles, 6 CBM | $150 to $210 per CBM, all-in to a warehouse door | Ocean plus destination CFS |
| Air | Shanghai PVG to Los Angeles LAX | $7.20 to $9.40 per kg, by weight break | Freightos Air Index $6.88 plus handling |
| DDP | Door to door, general consumer goods | $7.50 to $11.50 per kg by air; $4,900 to $7,900 per 40ft by sea | Forwarder quotes, October 2026 |
Two things to know before you use the table. The ocean readings are assessments of what carriers are charging, not prices you can book; a booking made on a Monday is priced against a number that publishes on Thursday. And none of the ocean figures includes the general rate increase filed for 1 November, so a November sailing will price above this table.

Ocean shipping cost from China to US: FCL and LCL rates
Full container load: 20GP and 40HQ by lane
| Lane | 40HQ, port to port | 20GP, derived | Transit | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shanghai to Los Angeles / Long Beach | $8,007 | $5,765 to $6,405 | 14 to 19 days | Index |

Three footnotes decide whether these numbers apply to you.
The 20GP column is arithmetic, not an assessment. Drewry, Freightos and SCFI all publish 40ft readings on the transpacific; none publishes a 20ft. The 20ft rate is the 40ft reading multiplied by 0.72 to 0.80, which is where carriers have quoted against the index this month. A 20ft holds about 60% of the volume of a 40ft, so a 20ft priced at 75% of the 40ft rate costs roughly 25% more per cubic metre. If your cargo fits in 28 CBM, the 40ft is usually the cheaper unit even when it sails half empty.
Anything marked modeled is this desk's arithmetic on the coast index, not a published assessment. West Coast ports price within about 3% of each other; the East Coast ports within about 2% of New York. Use those rows to sanity-check a quote, not to book.
40HQ against 40GP: the high-cube carries about 76 CBM against 67 CBM for a standard box, and prices $100 to $300 higher on this lane. If your cargo is light and bulky, the 40HQ is cheaper per cubic metre every time. If it is dense enough to hit the 26,500 kg payload, the standard box wins because you are paying for weight, not space.
Inland ramps are inland point intermodal: the carrier moves the box by rail from the West Coast under one through bill, and you collect it at the ramp. The rail leg is what the extra $1,700 to $2,600 buys. Compare it against a West Coast port rate plus your own trucking before assuming IPI is cheaper.
Less than container load: per CBM, and the charges at both ends
| Component | Shanghai to Los Angeles | Shanghai to New York | Charged per |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ocean freight | $95 to $140 | $120 to $165 | CBM or 1,000 kg, whichever is greater |
| Origin CFS and consolidation | $18 to $35 | $18 to $35 | CBM |
| Destination CFS and devanning | $40 to $80 | $50 to $95 | CBM |
| Release and documentation | $150 to $350 | $150 to $350 | Shipment, not volume |
| All-in at 6 CBM, to a warehouse door | $150 to $210 per CBM | $180 to $260 per CBM | Total divided by CBM |
LCL is billed on W/M: one cubic metre or 1,000 kg, whichever is greater. Cargo over 1,000 kg per CBM pays on weight, which is common with machinery, tiles and liquids. The minimum charge is one CBM, so a two-carton shipment pays for a cubic metre it does not fill.
The number that surprises first-time importers is on the destination side. The CFS charges per cubic metre to devan the container, then a flat release fee whether you shipped 2 CBM or 12. That flat fee is why the per-CBM cost of a small LCL shipment is roughly double the per-CBM cost of a large one.
One dated increase to plan around: CaroTrans filed an LCL general rate increase of $40 per W/M from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan to all US points, effective 15 November 2026, one-CBM minimum. On a $130 base rate that is about 30%, and it lands the week before Thanksgiving.
LCL stops making sense earlier than most guides admit, because the destination CFS charge scales with volume while the 20ft does not. At Los Angeles CFS rates the two meet just under 22 CBM, not the 12 to 15 CBM figure that gets repeated. The step-by-step process, including the ACE hold codes that stop a container at the CFS, is in our LCL consolidation and customs clearance guide.

Air freight and express rates per kg (2026 benchmarks)
Air freight price breaks from 45 kg to 1,000 kg
| Chargeable weight | Shanghai to Los Angeles | Shanghai to Chicago | Shenzhen to New York | Transit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| +45 kg | $9.20 to $10.80 per kg | $9.50 to $11.10 | $9.80 to $11.40 | 2 to 5 days |
| +100 kg | $8.50 to $9.40 per kg | $8.80 to $9.80 | $9.00 to $10.00 | 2 to 5 days |
| +300 kg | $8.00 to $8.80 per kg | $8.25 to $9.10 | $8.50 to $9.35 | 2 to 5 days |
| +500 kg | $7.60 to $8.40 per kg | $7.90 to $8.70 | $8.10 to $8.90 | 3 to 5 days |
| +1,000 kg | $7.20 to $7.90 per kg | $7.45 to $8.20 | $7.70 to $8.45 | 3 to 6 days |
Prices fall as the break rises because the fixed cost of handling a shipment is spread over more kilos. The step from +45 kg to +1,000 kg is worth 20% to 25% per kilo, which is usually more than any single forwarder discount you will negotiate. If you can hold a shipment two weeks and push it over a break, do that first.
The market reading behind the table is $6.88 per kg for China to North America in the week to 20 October 2026, up 19% after falling 18% during Golden Week. Forwarder rates sit above the index because the index tracks airport-to-airport spot prices, while a forwarder quote includes pickup, export clearance, screening and delivery.
Express is a different product at a different price. Integrators quote door to door with duties and taxes included, run 3 to 5 days, and charge $9 to $16 per kg at these weights. You are buying the customs entry and the final mile inside that number, which is why express beats air freight on shipments under about 100 kg and loses badly above 500 kg.
Index source: Freightos Air Index↗, China to North America at $6.88 per kg for the week to 20 October 2026. Weight-break ranges are forwarder quotes reviewed 26 October 2026.
Chargeable weight: divide by 6,000, or by 5,000 for express
Airlines bill the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is length × width × height in centimetres, divided by 6,000 for air freight. Express carriers divide by 5,000, which makes the same carton 20% heavier on paper.
Worked example, one carton 60 × 50 × 40 cm weighing 12 kg:
- Volume: 60 × 50 × 40 = 120,000 cm³
- Air freight chargeable weight: 120,000 ÷ 6,000 = 20 kg
- Express chargeable weight: 120,000 ÷ 5,000 = 24 kg
You pay for 20 kg by air and 24 kg by express, even though the carton weighs 12 kg. The conversion runs the other way too: one cubic metre equals 167 chargeable kilos by air and 200 by express. Light, bulky cargo is being charged for the space it occupies, which is why packaging decisions belong in a freight budget.
The divisor is also where air quotes go wrong. A forwarder who quotes a flat rate per kilo without asking for carton dimensions is quoting your declared weight, and the airline will re-weigh at the terminal.
For cargo that has to move in days rather than weeks, send us the deadline and we will price the integrator side; for anything above 500 kg, the air freight table above is the cheaper structure.
The hidden components of total landed cost
The base rate is one line out of roughly fifteen. What follows is every charge that lands between the factory door and your own dock, grouped by who bills it.
Origin charges in China
| Charge | Typical amount | Who bills it | Avoidable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pickup, factory to port, within 100 km | $180 to $350 per 40ft | Trucker | Partly, by loading at a CFS near the port |
| Export declaration and licence | $25 to $60 | Customs broker | No |
| Origin terminal handling, OTHC | $150 to $260 per 40ft | Terminal | No |
| Bill of lading and documentation | $45 to $110 | Carrier or forwarder | No |
| Origin CFS, LCL only | $18 to $35 per CBM | CFS operator | No |
Origin charges total $400 to $780 on a 40ft container, which is 5% to 9% of the ocean freight. They are not where the money is, but they are where quotes get compared unfairly: one forwarder bundles them into an all-in rate, the next lists the ocean leg only and adds these 400 dollars later.
Ocean and fuel surcharges
| Surcharge | What triggers it | Level in October 2026 | Checkable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| General rate increase, GRI | Carrier filing, 30 days' notice to the FMC | $1,500 to $3,000 per FEU filed for 1 November | Yes, filings are public |
| Peak season surcharge, PSS | Volume, typically August to November | $300 to $1,200 per FEU where still in force | Partly |
| Bunker adjustment factor, BAF | Fuel price, reset monthly | Elevated, tracking crude | Yes, in the tariff |
| Red Sea or contingency surcharge | Routing via the Cape of Good Hope | $150 to $600 per FEU on affected services | Partly |
| Vessel fee pass-through | Section 301 port fees on Chinese-built ships | Suspended to 9 November 2026 | No, lands inside the base rate |
The GRI line is where quotes diverge most, and it is the one you can verify before signing. Carrier filings to the Federal Maritime Commission are public, and the November round is on file at $1,500 per FEU to the West Coast for Hapag-Lloyd and $2,000 to $3,000 per 40ft for ZIM, Evergreen and HMM on the October round. A registered increase is not a collected one: in a week when carriers are still filling ships, part of a filing is absorbed in the negotiation, which is why a spot reading can fall while an increase is on file.
A BAF reset of $100 per FEU moves a West Coast all-in by about 1.2%. That is the surcharge to ignore when you are negotiating and verify when you are budgeting, because it is set by fuel rather than by your forwarder.
Rate notice: transpacific GRI filings for 15 October and 1 November 2026, compiled from carrier tariff registers; Hapag-Lloyd GRI/GRA notice↗ for 1 November 2026, $1,500 per FEU US West Coast and $1,000 US East Coast and Gulf.
Destination charges and US customs fees
| Charge | Amount | Who bills it | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Destination terminal handling, DTHC | $250 to $400 per 40ft | Terminal | Per container |
| Traffic mitigation fee, TMF | $81.26 per 40ft | Terminal, via WCMTOA | $40.63 per TEU from 1 August 2026 |
| Clean Truck Fund rate, CTF | $20.00 per 40ft | Terminal, through the trucker | Per container |
| ISF 10+2 filing | $35 to $75 | Broker | Per shipment |
| Customs entry | $150 to $300 | Broker | Per entry |
| Single-entry bond | $75 to $275 | Surety, via broker | Per entry |
| Merchandise processing fee, MPF | 0.3464% of entered value, $34.58 minimum, $670.86 maximum | CBP | Fiscal 2027, from 1 October 2026 |
| Harbor maintenance fee, HMF | 0.125% of cargo value | CBP | Per entry |
| Chassis | $35 to $50 per day at Los Angeles and Long Beach; $20 to $40 inland | Chassis pool | Per day out |
| Drayage, port to warehouse | $350 to $525 for 18 miles | Trucker | Per container |
| Demurrage and detention | $100 to $160 per day after free time | Carrier | 3 to 5 free days import, 4 to 7 detention |
| Duty disbursement | 2% to 5% of the duty advanced | Broker | Optional, avoidable |
Two of these are quoted wrong on most competitor pages, and both cost real money.
MPF is $34.58 to $670.86, not $31.67 to $614.35. CBP resets the floor and ceiling every fiscal year at the start of October. The fiscal 2027 figures took effect on 1 October 2026 under CBP Decision 26-14, published at 91 FR 48398. A broker invoicing the old ceiling is invoicing a rate that expired a month ago.
Chassis rental is a daily charge, not a flat fee. Los Angeles and Long Beach pools run $35 to $50 a day, inland ramps $20 to $40, and the meter starts at gate-out. Three days for a normal delivery is $105 to $150. If your receiver cannot take the box on the booked day, the chassis keeps billing while the container sits, and per diem after free time runs $75 to $150 a day on top of the carrier's detention.
One procedural change worth knowing: under the FMC's billing rules that took full effect in June 2026, a demurrage or detention invoice has to reach you within 30 calendar days of the charge with specific billing detail. An invoice that arrives late or without the detail can be disputed, and that is a stronger position than most importers realise.

The whole bill on one 40ft container
Assumptions: 40ft general purpose, 18,000 kg, 55 CBM, goods declared at $45,000, delivered to Vernon, 18 miles from the terminal, cleared on a single-entry bond, chassis returned inside three days.
| # | Line and who bills it | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ocean freight, Shanghai to Los Angeles | 8,007 |
| 2 | Origin handling, documentation, export declaration | 295 to 455 |
| 3 | Destination terminal handling | 250 to 400 |
| 4 | Traffic mitigation fee | 81.26 |
| 5 | Clean Truck Fund rate | 20.00 |
| 6 | ISF filing and customs entry | 185 to 375 |
| 7 | Single-entry bond | 75 to 275 |
| 8 | Merchandise processing fee | 155.88 |
| 9 | Harbor maintenance fee | 56.25 |
| 10 | Drayage, terminal to Vernon | 350 to 525 |
| 11 | Chassis, three days | 105 to 150 |
| Subtotal, delivered and cleared | 9,580 to 10,500 | |
| 12 | Duty at 37.5% of $45,000 | 16,875 |
| Total landed | 26,455 to 27,375 |
Spread over 900 units, freight is $8.90 a unit, the delivered cost is $10.64 to $11.67, and duty is $18.75. Duty is now more than twice the freight per unit, which is the single most useful number on this page for anyone pricing a product for the US market.
2026 market drivers: what moves this number, and when
Three forces are setting rates this year. None of them is a weekly reading, and all three are visible months ahead.
Red Sea routing and the capacity it absorbs
Ships diverting around the Cape of Good Hope add 10 to 14 days and absorb 15% to 20% of effective capacity on the Asia-Europe axis, which tightens the global fleet and spills into transpacific pricing. All three alliances and MSC have services transiting Suez again, and Freightos estimates full recovery in the first quarter of 2027. When that capacity returns, it arrives during the 2027 contract season, which is why carriers and shippers are both slow to lock annual rates at current levels.
Practically: a Red Sea surcharge of $150 to $600 per FEU is the visible cost. The invisible cost is transit reliability, and that is what forces buffer stock.
Tariff layers, and the two dates that change them
The duty stack on Chinese goods changed twice this year and most pages are still describing the old one. When the Supreme Court held in February 2026 that IEEPA does not authorise tariffs, the 20% fentanyl duty and the 10% reciprocal duty terminated for goods entered on or after 24 February 2026. What remains is the older, more durable structure.
| Layer | Rate | Status |
|---|---|---|
| MFN, Column 1 General | 0 to 20%, by HTS line | In force |
| Section 301 forced-labor action | 12.5% for China | In force since 24 July 2026 |
| Legacy Section 301, Lists 1 to 4A | 7.5% to 100% | In force; USTR confirmed continuation on 7 October 2026 |
| Section 232, where it applies | up to 50% on steel, aluminium, copper, autos | In force |
| 178 product exclusions | relief from the list rate | Expire 9 November 2026, 23:59 ET |
| US-China truce | current terms | Expires 10 January 2027 |
MFN plus 12.5% plus a 25% List 3 rate is 37.5%, which is where most consumer goods sit. The 9 November date matters more than any freight negotiation: on a $45,000 entry that loses a 25-point exclusion, the bill rises by $11,250, more than the ocean freight and every destination charge combined. Entries filed from 10 November pay the underlying rate, and there is no retroactive relief.
The same date carries a second expiry. USTR's suspension of Section 301 port fees on Chinese-owned, operated and built vessels also runs to 9 November. If it lapses, carriers on this lane have signalled they will recover it as a per-container surcharge inside the base rate, where you cannot itemise or audit it.

The seasonal calendar that actually repeats
Freight does not spike at random. It spikes on four predictable dates, and the first one is 12 weeks out.
| Window | What happens | Effect on your rate |
|---|---|---|
| Now to mid-December 2026 | Pre-Lunar New Year build | Space tightens from late November; book 3 to 4 weeks out |
| Late December to early January | Rush to load before factories close | $1,500 to $2,500 per FEU above the autumn level is typical |
| 5 to 12 February 2027 | Chinese New Year, 6 February | Factories wind down from mid-January; capacity collapses |
| March 2027 | Restart, uneven | Rates fall, but reliability is poor for 4 to 6 weeks |
| 1 to 7 October 2027 | Golden Week | A full stop at the factory end |
Chinese New Year falls on 6 February 2027, eleven days earlier than in 2026. Production orders for first-quarter inventory need to be placed by mid-November 2026, bookings by mid-December, and cargo at the port by mid-January. Anything promised for delivery in the last week before the holiday slips into it, and a one-day slip becomes a five-week slip.

Five ways to cut the freight bill in 2026
Consolidate at a China CFS before you book. Two LCL shipments of 3 CBM each pay two release fees, two sets of destination handling and two minimums. Combined into 6 CBM they pay one, which is typically $400 to $700 saved on the destination side alone, before the ocean rate break.
Design the carton, not just the product. A 5 cm reduction on one dimension of a 60 × 50 × 40 carton drops chargeable weight from 20 kg to 18.3 kg by air, and can add two units per layer in a container. On 500 cartons that is $600 to $900 of air freight, and the same principle applied to a 40HQ can put 8% more units in the box for the same ocean rate.
Move the Incoterm to where you can see the cost. Under EXW you buy freight from a factory that has no interest in your landed cost. Under FOB you control the forwarder, the sailing and the surcharge list, and duty stays visible as a separate line. Under DDP you get one number and lose the ability to audit it: a DDP quote without an HTS code is a price for a product the forwarder has not seen, and the spread between a 7.5% and a 25% classification is $7,875 on a $45,000 entry.
Lock the rate when the index is boring. Quarterly fixed rates and index-linked contracts both work; what does not work is buying spot every month and calling it flexibility. Contract and spot converge in quiet quarters and separate in tight ones; the time to negotiate is when your own volume is steady and the index is flat, which is cheaper than negotiating while a GRI is on file.
Book against the filing calendar, not the sailing calendar. A GRI filed for 1 November applies to sailings on or after that date. A booking confirmed in October for a late-October sailing avoids it. The same logic applies to the 15 November LCL increase: cargo that sails before it is priced before it.
Estimate your own shipment
The three examples below use the rates on this page. They are arithmetic, not quotes: your HTS code, your CFS tariff and your accessorials will move the total.
| Your shipment | Method | Freight and fees | Duty at 37.5% | Landed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 200 kg, 1.2 CBM, value $12,000 | Air, DDP | $1,960 | included | $1,960 |
| 5 CBM, 900 kg, value $18,000 | LCL to a warehouse door | $1,500 | $6,750 | $8,250 |
| 1 × 40HQ, 55 CBM, 18,000 kg, value $45,000 | FCL to a warehouse door | $9,580 to $10,500 | $16,875 | $26,455 to $27,375 |
To get a real number, send five things: the product and its HTS code if you have one, the total cartons and dimensions, the gross weight, the delivery postcode, and whether you want port-to-port, door-to-door or DDP. With those, a quote can be built line by line against the tables above, including the surcharges that apply to your sailing week. Use the contact form or reply to any quote you already hold from us.
If the destination is an Amazon fulfilment centre, the delivery appointment rules change the last two lines of the container table, and the nine-item brief in our shipment guide for Amazon FBA covers what the carrier will ask for.
FAQ
How much does it cost to ship a 40ft container from China to the US in 2026?
The ocean leg is $8,007 from Shanghai to Los Angeles and $10,166 to New York, per the 22 October 2026 assessment. Delivered and cleared to a Los Angeles warehouse, budget $9,580 to $10,500 before duty. With duty at 37.5% on $45,000 of goods, the landed total is $26,455 to $27,375.
Is it cheaper to ship 10 CBM by LCL or in a 20ft container?
LCL, by a wide margin. At Los Angeles CFS rates, 10 CBM costs roughly $1,900 to $2,600 all-in against $5,765 to $6,405 for a 20ft. The crossover sits just under 22 CBM, and it moves with the destination CFS tariff rather than with the ocean rate.
Are the rates on this page live?
They are the published assessments for the week to 22 October 2026, and each table says which figure is an index, which is a tariff and which is this desk's arithmetic. An index reading is not a bookable price: a real quote adds a vessel, a sailing week and a surcharge list.
What is the merchandise processing fee in 2026?
0.3464% of entered value, with a floor of $34.58 and a ceiling of $670.86 for fiscal 2027, in force since 1 October 2026. The older $31.67 to $614.35 figures still circulating are the fiscal 2026 amounts.
How much does it cost to ship by air from China to the US?
$7.20 to $9.40 per chargeable kilo at 100 kg and above in October 2026, against a market index of $6.88. Below 45 kg, express at $9 to $16 per kg door-to-door usually works out cheaper once the customs entry and the final mile are counted.
Will rates rise before Chinese New Year 2027?
Expect $1,500 to $2,500 per FEU above the autumn level into January, and air up 20% to 30%. Factories close from around 5 February 2027, and production needs to be finished by mid-January to catch a sailing. Bookings made in the last week before the holiday are the ones that get rolled.
